Viral Enhancers
This article is actually going to be about the ways that the viral feedback loop can be enhanced through UI enhancements and other subtle practices. Remember, small things, massive effects… BUT for now, lets have some viral fun.

I wrote an excel spreadsheet to let you play with the numbers to see how many people might really be impacted by Shuru. The file is here. Let me know what you think! Here are some shots of what the output looks like. You can see that with a modest multiplier (15% of people forward to 15 people on average) we get to almost 70 million emails in the 15th generation of forwarding.

And as a chart (FULL Image, XLS)...

Nerd!
I love the qbert viral graphic. Read stuff on superconnectors? Hmmm.
Ya, superconnectors… interesting stuff. Grannovetter talks about them, and so does Gladwell. We have to encourage superconnectors and enable them. Does the presence of superconnectors change the viral calculations? I dont think so.. its still all about averages no?
Yes, all about averages. But our aim is to push everyone to become a superconnector. It could be one of the badges. It doesn’t change the viral calculations unless we weight the ratings based on someone being a superconnector. By our definition, the superconnector would have a heavier foot and that would result in greater and faster response rates. If that’s true, then the impact would be faster and stronger and the individual rating or impact score might need to be modified to reflect their impact on the AVERAGE. But I might be too theoretical. The modest 15% may be too modest.
[...] Welcome to the Shuru design site! The following pages, and this blog, are designed to show anyone the details and big ideas behind Shuru. Once you have seen enough, get in touch and tell us how you would like to help. We are hoping for a launch date of July 1st, 2007 – so get reading! Tool. Shuru is three things: a tool, a community, and a starting place. It is a tool for interested people to leverage the viral potential of the internet and mobile phones to spread a social message. Then, using the same technologies, the tool empowers these ‘message readers’ by allowing them to take real world ‘actions’ that the message suggests. This meticulously designed tool will unleash the viral potential of communications technologies, and will be freely available to all – anyone can make a message, suggest action, and tip the first domino. Then, if people are convinced, thousands or even millions of people can easily join in. Community. As more and more people take action on individual messages, or causes, a social network of action takers and cause creators will form. This will be a broad scale network, with automatic membership resulting from use of the tools above. Individual action history will be tracked, and publicly displayed, for each user – around this core community feature, groups will form. These groups might allowing people to make connections and collaborate on future social action, or they might simply let a causal user brag about her interests and impact on the world. Starting place. If the design of both the tool and community is correct, Shuru will ride (and help create!) the next wave of an evolution in democracy. By creating an intelligent way to debate and make choices about the complex realities of our connected world, and then coordinating the actions of millions of people at the same time, Shuru is a starting place for a truly participatory democracy: one where a la carte political participation becomes the norm, and existing political structures better serve the needs of all people. Tired of rich special interest lobbyists determining the fate of the world? Shuru will give mere individuals the power to build a groundswell support for any worthy issue – in effect, becoming the people’s lobbyist. [...]
